Children's ticket purchase instructions for China Trains
1. Can children travel alone?
Except for students commuting to school and children whose parents the railway operator agrees to supervise during the journey, children under the age of 14 must travel with an adult.
2. How do children purchase tickets?
1) Children aged 6 and under 14 traveling with an adult must purchase a discounted child ticket; children aged 14 and over must purchase a full-fare ticket. Each adult passenger may bring one child under the age of 6 free of charge, provided they do not occupy a separate seat. If there are more than one child, discounted child tickets must be purchased for the additional child. The child's age is calculated based on the date of travel.
2) Passengers traveling with children who are traveling free of charge must notify the railway operator in advance when purchasing tickets. The valid ID of the child traveling free of charge will serve as their travel certificate.
3) Children traveling free of charge must purchase discounted child tickets if they occupy a separate seat. 4) The travel date, train number, and seat class for a child's discounted ticket must be the same as the adult's ticket, and the destination must not be further than the adult's.
3. Do I need an ID to purchase a child's discounted ticket?
Tickets must be purchased in real name, and the purchaser must present the passenger's valid ID. Please use the child's own valid ID to purchase the ticket.
4. What discounts are offered with a child's discounted ticket?
Children's discounted tickets offer discounts on ordinary passenger trains, expedited trains, air-conditioned trains, and EMU train seats. Ordinary passenger train fares for children with discounted tickets are calculated at 50% of the published fare for the corresponding passenger and supplementary tickets. Children traveling free of charge or with discounted tickets who use a separate sleeper berth will be charged the full sleeper fare. If the train has air conditioning, they will also be charged half the air-conditioning fare. Children's discounted high-speed train fares are calculated at 50% of the corresponding seat's published fare. Second-class sleeper fares are calculated at the second-class sleeper fare minus 50% of the second-class seat's published fare. Other sleeper fares are calculated at the corresponding sleeper fare minus 50% of the first-class seat's published fare. Children's discounted tickets are issued for the same seat class as adult tickets and cannot reach a destination further than the adult's ticket.
